During the Third Reich, he was responsible for mobilizing German and foreign workers for the Wehrmacht. Reich Defense Commissioner of Kassel, 1939. Plenipotentiary-General for Labor Mobilization, 1942-1945. Deported 5,000,000 people from their homes in occupied territories to work as slave labor in Germany. Also presided over extermination of tens of thousands of Polish Jews. Tried and convicted as a war criminal, despite his contention that he "knew nothing." Hanged on October 16, 1946. |

Convicted of murder in connection with deaths at border crossings, 1995. Sentenced to three years in prison. |

(1877-1970). Director, German National Bank, 1916, President, 1923-1939. Reich Currency Commissioner, 1923. Chairman, German Delegation to Negotiate the Young Plan, 1929. Urged appointment of Hitler as Chancellor and raised funds for Nazi Party, 1932-1933. Reich Minister of Economics, 1934-1937. Although anti-Semitic, he negotiated a deal with the World Zionist Organization that allowed about 170,000 Jews to buy their way out of Germany between 1934-1938. Became disillusioned with Nazis and resigned as Minister of Economics, 1937. While he was not a plotter, Schacht was arrested following the attempted assassination of Hitler, 1944. Sent to Dachau Concentration Camp. After the war, he was arrested by the Allies and tried for crimes against humanity, but found not guilty. Re-arrested by the German government, he was convicted on other charges and sentenced to eight years in prison. Released in 1948 and re-entered the banking profession. |
