Karl Bernhardovich Radek
(1885-1939). Born Karl Sobelsohn. Joined Social Democratic Party of Poland, 1902, and worked closely with Rosa Luxemburg and Leo Jogiches. Exiled to Germany, 1908-1913. Worked with Lenin in Switzerland, whom he joined for the train ride that took them into Russia, 1917. Member of the Bolshevik Central Committee, 1917. Sent by the Central Committee of the Russian Communist Party to Germany to help organize the German Communist movement and the fledgling revolutionary government. Jailed in Berlin after the effort failed, but returned to Russia, 1920. Supported Trotsky against Stalin after Lenin's death. Expelled from the Communist Party, 1927, but readmitted in 1929 after admitting his errors. Arrested and tried for treason, 1937. Sentenced to 10 years in prison but executed in 1939. |
