| "Bella for Senate," 1-3/4" Blue/White Celluloid, featuring an outline of Bella in one of her trademark hats. Bella Savitsky Abzug (1920-1998) was a true original. Outspoken, flamboyant, and a strident liberal, she fearlessly advocated for the poor, gays, civil rights, and other sometimes unpopular causes. Abzug was elected as a New York Democrat to Congress and served from 1971-1977. In 1976, she unsuccessfully challenged Daniel Moynihan in the Democratic Primary for the U.S. Senate. She later ran for Mayor of New York, 1977, and for her old House seat, in 1978 and 1986. She was a founding member of numerous feminist organizations. |
