David Koresh
(August 17, 1959, Houston, Texas-April 19, 1993, Waco, Texas). Prophet, Branch Davidians, 1987-1993. Born Vernon Wayne Howell. Joined Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1979 (expelled). Joined Branch Davidian sect, Waco, Texas, 1981. Had an affair with Branch Davidian Prophetess, Lois Roden. After her death, Howell successfully fought her son, George Roden, for control, defeating his rival in a gun battle, 1987. Trial for attempted murder ended in mistrial. Changed his name to David Koresh. Created community at Mount Carmel near Waco, housing about 100 followers. Polygamist. On February 28, 1993, the FBI tried to execute a warrant for Koresh on charges of child abuse and possession of illegal weapons. A shoot-out ensued that left 10 dead and the Branch Davidians under seige from the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Negotiations continued for 51 days, ending on April 19, 1993, when the compound burned to the ground, killing Koresh and 74 followers, including 21 children.
