Reverend Charles Edward Coughlin

(October 25, 1891, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada-October 27, 1979, Birmingham, Michigan). Roman Catholic Priest and Social Reformer. "Father" Coughlin was known as the "Radio Priest." Ordained Priest, 1916. Taught in Canadian Basilian schools. Transferred to the Detroit Diocese in 1923. Pastor, Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan, 1926, remaining there until his retirement, 1966. Host, Sunday afternoon radio broadcast, "Golden Hour of the Little Flower," which was carried throughout the country, 1926-1942. An advocate for the poor during the Depression. Initially supported Franklin D. Roosevelt. Moved increasingly toward the Right until he became associated with the Fascist extreme. Founder, National Union for Social Justice, 1934. Urged formation of the Union Party in 1936, and formed alliances with Huey P. Long and Gerald L. K. Smith. Anti-Semitic and isolationist. Ordered to cease his radio broadcasts by Cardinal Mooney, 1942. Retired to his parish, where he died in 1979.

(1489, Nottinghamshire, England-1556, Oxford, England). Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury and Martyr. Aided Henry VIII in his divorce from Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, and Anne of Cleves. A committed Protestant. Responsible for the 10 Articles and the Prayer Books of 1549 and 1552. When the Catholic, Mary, assumed the throne, he was put on trial for heresy and recanted. In 1556, he reasserted his Protestant views and was burned at the stake.
