Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise

(March 29, 1819, Steingrub, Bohemia-March 26, 1900, Cincinnati, Ohio). Jewish Reform Rabbi. Ordained Rabbi, 1842. Emigrated to United States, 1846. Rabbi, Congregation Beth-El, Albany, New York. Initiated a number of radical changes in the Orthodox rituals and encountered resistance. His congregation split when he admitted that he did not believe in a personal Messiah or in resurrection of the dead. His followers formed a new synagogue, Anshe Emes. Rabbi, Bene Yeshurun, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1854. Founder, The Israelite. Continued to reform Jewish traditions. Established Union of American Hebrew Congregations, 1873, Hebrew Union College, 1875, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis, 1889.
