(Nissan 18, 1878-1944, Kazakhstan). Hassidic Chief Rabbi of the Ukraine and Yekaterinoslav, 1938-1944. Father of Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson. Noted Kabbalist. Arrested by the Soviet KGB in 1939 and exiled to Kazakhstan, where he died.

Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneersohn
(April 18, 1902, Nikolaev, Russia-June 12, 1994, New York, New York). Chasidic Jewish Rabbi and 7th Lubavitcher Rebbe, 1950-1994. Recognized as a child genius (ilui) and his reputation for scholarship grew with the years. First Chasidic Rebbe to receive a college degree. Fluent in 10 languages. Married the daughter of the then Lubavitch Rebbe and moved to the U.S., 1941. Upon the death of the 6th Lubavitch Rebbe, he succeeded to the title, 1950. As leader of the Chabad Jews, he led an unprecedented revival of faith among non-observant Jews, utilizing high-tech methods of outreach to young people. A political, as well as religious, power in New York. When he died in 1994, a portion of his followers proclaimed him the Messiah, causing a split among the Lubavitch community. A descendant of the Baal Hatanya Rabbi Shneur Zalman Schneursohn of Liadi. Son of Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Schneerson.

A kabbalist, his works form the cornerstone of the Lubavitch Hassidic movement. Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson is his descendant.
