(December 12, 1806, Neunkirchen, Westphalia, Prussia-February 1, 1868, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). Conservative Jewish Rabbi and Founder of the Jewish Press of America. Emigrated to Richmond, Virgina, May, 1824. Rabbi, Congregation Mikveh Israel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1828-1850. Wrote "The Jews and the Mosaic Law" (1833) and published it himself. Author and publisher of numerous other works. Rabbi, Congregation Beth El-Emeth, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1857-1868. President, Maimonides College.
