(May 10, 1911, Brooklyn, New York-February 4, 1943, on board SS Dorchester). Jewish Rabbi. Ordained Rabbi, Temple Beth Israel, York, Pennsylvania, 1937-1941. Enlisted as Chaplain, U.S. Army, 1941. On board the SS Dorchester, a freighter-turned troop transport, in the north Atlantic, when the ship was struck by a German torpedo, February 4, 1943. Along with 3 Christian Chaplains on the sinking vessel, he gave away his life jacket, parka, and gloves to help others survive. All four religious leaders died when the ship went down, standing on the deck with arms interlocked. |
