(1697, Altona, Germany-1776). Jewish Rabbi. A leading scholar, kabbalist, and vocal anti-Shabbatean. Known as a stormy, independent, and uncompromising advocate. Authored responsa and commentaries on the Mishnah. Rabbi of Emden, 1728-1733. Embroiled in a bitter 14-year controversy with Rabbi Jonathan Eybeschuetz, whom he charged with Sabbateanism. Forced to flee Germany for Amsterdam.

Gur Rebbe Sfas Emes

(1847, Warsaw, Poland-January 11, 1905, Gora Kalwaria, Poland). Hassidic Rebbe. Born Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter, but known as the Sfas Emes (or Sfat Emes) after his writings. 2nd Rebbe of the Gur Hassidim. Grandson of the Chiddushei HaRim. Initially resisted pressure to become Rebbe on his grandfather's death, but assumed post on the death of Rebbe Chanoch Henoch, 1870-1905. His birth date is sometimes given as 1855.
