Pompous and powerful, he relied on the support of King Henry VIII. But when Henry sought to divorce Queen Katharine to marry Anne Boleyn, Wolsey's fortunes began to decline. Anne was hostile to him. The failure of the ecclesiastical trial of the divorce (1529) led to the forfeiture of his lands and his disgrace. Pardoned, but never regained his influence and remained at York. His health broken, he was again arrested on November 4, 1530, for high treason. Died on way to London under guard.
