(December 28, 1715, Gloucester, England-September 30, 1770, Newburyport, England). Methodist Minister. Joined the Methodist group led by John and Charles Wesley. Ordained Deacon, Anglican Church, 1736. A powerful preacher. Made seven trips to America beginning in 1738. Ordained Priest, Anglican Church, 1739. Began series of open-air meetings in Bristol. Again went to America, where he became an influential figure in the "Great Awakening." About 1741, he adopted Calvinistic views, including predestination, and broke away from the Methodists. While his personal friendship with Wesley continued, he led the Calvinistic Methodists in Wales and elsewhere along a distinct path. In London, he preached in the Moorfields Tabernacle. Appointed Chaplain in the Connexion (Methodist association sponsored by the Countess of Huntingdon).
