Appointed Grand Inquisitor of Castile and Aragon for the Roman Catholic Church, 1483, and thus the first Grand Inquisitor of Span. Urged the forced conversion of Jews or their expulsion from Spain. Known for his cruelty. The Spanish Inquisition during his tenure may have been responsible for the deaths of between 2,000 and 8,800 "heretics," "infidels," and Jews.
