The name became Swedenborg when the family was enobled in 1719. Scientist and engineer. Spoke 11 languages. An official of the Swedish Board of Mines, to 1747. Believed the Second Coming occurred in 1757. Author of A Philosophical Argument on the Infinite and Final Cause of Creation, The True Christian Religion, Arcana Coelestia, and other works. Experienced a mystical conversion in which "heaven was opened" to him, 1745. Advocated a neo-Platonic religious view that asserted God was invisible, spaceless, and timeless and the world was sustained by spirits and angels. His followers formed the New Jerusalem Church in 1787.
