Townsend and Charles E. Coughlin. A founder, Union Party, 1936. Publisher, The Cross and Flag, 1942-1976. Founder, America First Party. American First Party candidate for President, 1944. Founder, Christian Nationalist Crusade, 1946. Founder, Christian Nationalist Party. Christian Nationalist Party candidate for President, 1948, 1956. (February 9, 1800, Tunbridge, Vermont-June 27, 1844, Carthage, Illinois). Associate President, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Nursed his younger brother, Joseph, back to health after osteomyelitis, c. 1813. Married Jerusha Barden, November 2, 1826. Baptized, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, June, 1829. One of the Eight Witnesses who examined the golden plates. One of the six signers of the original charter for the Church, 1830. Missionary to Ohio and Missouri. Chief aide to Joseph Smith, Jr. Assistant President, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, December, 1834. Second Counselor in the First Presidency, November, 1837. Jailed in Liberty, Missouri, on charges of treason, murder, arson and stealing, October, 1838. Allowed to escape. Moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. Named Presiding Patriarch and Associate President. Charged with riot and treason and jailed in Carthage, Illinois, June, 1844. Murdered by gunfire while guarding a door against a lynch mob, June 27, 1844.

Honorary Chaplain to Queen Victoria, 1896. Bishop of Sierra Leone, 1897-1901. Chaplain General, British Military, November, 1901-1925. Known as "Everybody's Bishop." Made C.V.O, 1906, C.B., 1921; and K.C.B., 1925. Died on board the S.S. Orion, March 28, 1938 and buried at sea.

(December 23, 1805, Sharon, Vermont-June 27, 1844, Carthage, Illinois). Founder and First Prophet, Seer, Revelator, and President, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1830-1844. Received visions between 1820 and 1827 revealing that he was selected to restore the Church of Christ on earth. Discovered gold plates with ancient writings that he translated as the Book of Mormon, 1830. Founder, first Prophet, Seer, Revelator, and President, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1830. Moved to Kirtland, Ohio, 1831, then to Jackson County, Missouri, 1838, and finally to Nauvoo, Illinois, 1839. Ruled Nauvoo as the civil, religious, and military authority. Reportedly practiced polygamy and had at least 27 wives. Independent candidate for President, 1844. Hostility toward the Mormons from surrounding communities led to his arrest following a riot on June 10, 1844. On June 27, 1844, he was taken from his cell by a mob and shot to death.

Author of Essentials in Church History (1922) and The Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith (1938). President of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, 1951. Ordained and set apart as 10th Prophet, Seer, Revelator and President, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, January 23, 1970. Noted as a theologian and genealogist.
