Reverend Charles Monroe Sheldon
(February 26, 1857, Wellsville, New York-February 24, 1946, Topeka, Kansas). Congregationalist Minister. Ordained Minister, Congregational Church, 1886. Pastor, Central Congregational Church, Topeka, Kansas, 1889-1919. A leading proponent of the Social Gospel movement. Noted Christian author. His In His Steps, first published in 1897, sold more than 15 million copies and was translated into several languages. He coined the phrase, "What would Jesus do?" Once invited to edit the Topeka Daily Capitol "as Jesus would." He did so in 1900, banning liquor and tobacco advertisements and declining to cover events he deemed unedifying. The papers' circulation soared. Retired as Pastor, 1919, and became editor of the Christian Herald until 1925.
