Ma Anand Sheela
(1952-Alive). Personal Secretary to Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho), 1981-1985. Born Sheela Silverman or Sheela Birnstiel. Acknowledged as the "power behind the throne" of the Rajneesh cult, Rajneesh Puram, Oregon, Ma Anand Sheela was the official spokesperson for the Bhagwan during his Oregon phase. Gradually, she became known for her dictatorial ways, despite the preaching of free love and religious exuberance. Charged with a plot to poison salad bars in 10 restaurants in The Dalles, Oregon, in 1984, sickening 751 people with salmonella bacteria. The Bhagwan also accused Sheela of embezzlement, attempted murder, and illegal bugging. Sheela fled to Germany and Rajneeshpuram began to unravel. The Bhagwan was deported to India in 1985, dying there in 1990. Sheela was convicted of masterminding the salmonella attack and ended up in federal prison in Pleasanton, California, where she served 29 months for attempted murder, assault, arson and wiretapping. Later lived in Switzerland.
