Dr. Albert Schweitzer

(January 14, 1875-Kayserberg, Upper Alsace, Germany (now part of France)-September 5, 1965, Labarene, Gabon). Medical Missionary and Nobel Laureate. Licensed in theology, 1900. Preacher, St. Nicholas Church, Strasbourg, France, 1899. Administrator, Theological College of St. Thomas, Strasbourg, France, 1901-1912. Author of The Quest of the Historical Jesus (1906) and Culture and Ethics (1923). Internationally known concert organist. Musicologist. Obtained M.D., 1913, and founded a hospital in Lambarene, French Equatorial Africa. Prisoner-of-War of the French, 1917-1918. Returned to Europe to preach, teach, and study, 1918-1924. In 1924, he went back to Lambarene, where he spent the rest of his life. Expanded his hospital to 70 buildings that could care for over 500 patients. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952.
