(August 17, 1740, Cesena, Italy-August 20, 1823, Rome, Italy). Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and Bishop of Rome, 1800-1823. Born Luigi Barnaba Chiaramonte. Entered Benedictine monastery as Brother Gregory, 1756. Ordained Priest, 1765. Teacher. Family friend of Pius VI. Abbot of San Callisto. Bishop of Tivoli, 1782. Bishop of Imola. Elevated to the College of Cardinals, February 14, 1785. Elected Pope, March 14, 1800, following a 14 week conclave. Signed Concordate of 1801 with Napoleon. Traveled to Paris to crown Napoleon, but Napoleon took the crown from the Pope's hands and crowned himself. Taken prisoner by Napoleon, 1809, and imprisoned in Fontainebleu. Freed and returned to Rome, May 24, 1814. Restored the Jesuits.

(May 13, 1792, Senigallia, Italy-February 7, 1878, Rome, Italy). 254th Pope, Roman Catholic Church and Bishop of Rome, 1846-1878. Born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti. Ordained Priest, 1819. Archbishop of Spoleto, 1827. Bishop of Imola, 1832. Elevated to the College of Cardinals, 1840. 254th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, June 16, 1846. Initially a liberal who made gestures of support to Italian nationalists. Turned reactionary. Forced to flee in disguise to Gaeta, November 24, 1848, to escape mobs. Returned to Rome, April 12, 1850. Gradually lost control of temporal domains and Rome itself on September 20, 1870. Confined himself to the Vatican and considered himself a prisoner. Defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception (December 8, 1854). Convened the first Vatican Council, which defined the doctrine of Papal Infallibility (July 18, 1870). An ultramontanist. Known as "Pio Nono." Anticlerical mobs tried to fling his corpse into the Tiber, July 13, 1881. Possible future Saint.

Bishop of Mantua, Italy, November 10, 1884. Elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals in a secret consistory, June, 1893. Publicly proclaimed as Cardinal and Patriarch of Venice, 1896. Pope and Bishop of Rome, August 3, 1903-August 20, 1914. His pontificate was noted for its conservative agenda. He condemned "modernists" and "relativists." Canonized Saint by Pope Pius XII, May 31, 1954, with his feast day celebrated August 21.

Ordained Priest, April, 1899. Apostolic Nuncio to Bavaria and Titular Archbishop of Sardes, April, 1917. Apostolic Nuncio to the German Republic, June, 1920. Elevated to the College of Cardinals, December 16, 1929. Secretary of State of Vatican City, February 7, 1930. Arranged concordants with Bavaria, Prussia, Austria, and Germany. 259th Pope and Bishop of Rome, March 2, 1939. Accused of being friendly to Hitler, but also praised for his efforts to save Jews by granting them Vatican citizenship and supporting the underground. Noted for his devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, defining the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (November 12, 1950), and the promotion of the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. A theological conservative. Outspoken in his condemnation of Communism.

(April 20, 1918-Alive). Pope of the True Catholic Church. Born Earl Pulvermacher. Joined Capuchin Order, August 28, 1942, taking the name Lucian. Ordained Priest, Roman Catholic Church, June 5, 1946. Assistant Priest, St. Francis Parish, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1947-1948. Missionary, Ryukyu Islands, 1948-1955. Missionary, Okinawa, 1955-1970. Missionary in Australia, 1970-1976. Left the Capuchin Order and the Roman Catholic Church (Novus Ordo), 1976. A devoted theological conservative who maintains that he is following the "true" Catholic teachings. Elected Pope of the True Catholic Church as Pius XIII, at a conclave of traditionalist Catholics in Montana, October 24, 1998. His followers assert that the Papacy had been vacant between the death of Pope Pius XII and Father Lucian's election as Pius XIII.
