(c. 1911, Bogorodskoye, Russia-May 3, 1990, Moscow, U.S.S.R.). Russian Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow and All of Russia, 1971-1990. Born Sergei Izvekov. Took monastic vows, c. 1928. Father Superior of the Pskov-Pechyora Monastery, 1949-1953. Business Manager, Moscow Patriarchate, 1960-1970. Member, Holy Synod, Russian Orthodox Church, 1960-1990. Noted for guiding the Russian Orthodox Church under four Soviet leaders, often criticized for bowing to Kremlin pressure.

Received the stigmata of a pierced side, August 5-7, 1918, and the Visible Stigmata of the five wounds of Christ, September 20, 1918. Attributed with the gifts of bilocation, perfume, and prophecy. Amid accusations by detractors, public access to him was restricted by the Roman Catholic Church, 1922. Further restrict5ed, 1931-1933. With a growing following, he built a Home to Relieve Suffering, 1956, and a medical and religious center, 1957. His stigmata healed just before his death. Canonized Saint, February 28, 2002.
