(October 14, 1644, London, England-July 30, 1718, Ruscombe, Berkshire, England ). Quaker Leader and Founder of Pennsylvania. Son of Admiral Sir William Penn. Became Member, Society of Friends, c. 1667. Frequently arrested and persecuted for his faith, Penn was granted a Royal Charter as proprietor of territory along the Atlantic seaboard and the interior of America, February 24, 1681. He and his followers then emigrated to America in 1682. They established a liberal government for the new colony, which became known as Pennsylvania (Penn's Woods). Governor of the Colony (1682-1692, 1694-1718), where he was known as a friend of the Native Americans and an advocate of religious tolerance. Various intrigues resulted in his loss of both wealth and estate and he died in poverty.
