His Holiness Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh Osho
(December 11, 1931, Kuchwada, India-January 19, 1990, Pune, India). Spiritual Teacher. Born Rajneesh Chandra Mohan Jain and also known as Acharya Rajneesh. Began public ministry at Sarva Dharma Sammelan Jain festival, Jabalpur, India, 1939. Became enlightened March 21, 1953. Professor of Philosophy, Jabalpur University, to 1966. Taught a philosophy which incorporated elements of major world faiths, emphasizing laughter, love, meditation, creativity, celebration and awareness. His controversial views included free love and meditative therapy. Initiated his first sannyasin, September 26, 1970. Founder, Ashram, Pune, India, 1974. Entered period of public silence, 1981-1984. Moved to the United States and founded Rajneeshpuram, Wasco County, Oregon, 1981. Lived in luxury, with 93 Rolls-Royces. Opposition to his group and accusations against his top followers of attempted murder and other crimes caused him to flee country. Returned to Pune, 1987. Took name of Osho, 1988. Died of heart failure.
