Honorable Elijah Muhammad

(October 10, 1897, Sandersville, Georgia-February 25, 1975, Chicago, Illinois). Founder and Messenger of Allah, Nation of Islam. Born Elijah Poole. Came under the influence of W.D. Fard, founder of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam, and became his chief assistant. Founded Nation of Islam Temple No. 2, Chicago, Illinois, 1932. When Fard disappeared in 1934, Muhammad organized his own movement and took his Muslim name. Known as the Messenger of Allah. Preached militant Black nationalism. Imprisoned for supporting the Japanese during WWII. Emerged from confinement with a strong following among Black prisoners. Over time, the Nation of Islam ("Black Muslims") became a major religious force in Black communities, despite personal attacks on his life style. After his death, his son led a group of followers into orthodox Islam, while most believers remained under the leadership of Louis Farrakhan.
