(February 15, 1782, Pittsfield, Massachuetts-December 20, 1849, Hampton, Vermont). Founder and First President, Adventist Church, 1845-1849. Farmer. Converted from deism to militant fundamentalism, c. 1816. Believed Christ would return to earth around 1843 and first announced this view in 1831. Licensed to preach, Baptist Church, 1833. Leader of the Adventist movement. Predicted Second Coming of Christ would occur between March 21, 1843 and March 21, 1844. One-half million of his followers prepared themselves to meet the End Times. After the predicted end failed to materialize, he then predicted it would occur on October 22, 1844. This second failure was known as "The Great Disappointment." Founder and President, Adventist Church, 1845. Despite his miscalculations, the Adventist movement continued to grow even after his death and currently several denominations derived from his teachings are thriving throughout the world.
