A leading defender of papal infallibility at the first Vatican Council, 1870. Elevated to the College of Cardinals, March 15, 1875. Participated in the Conclave of 1878. Active in social reforms and the temperance movement.

Leader of "The Family" communal cult, c. 1968-Current. Taught racist and esoteric doctrines based on hatred and satanism. Responsible for inspiring Family members to ritualistically kill Sharon Tate, the actress wife of Roman Polanski, and her five friends, as well as three others, 1969. Convicted and sentenced to death, 1971. Sentence commuted to life in prison when California abolished the death penalty. Remains in prison at current time.
