A leading defender of papal infallibility at the first Vatican Council, 1870. Elevated to the College of Cardinals, March 15, 1875. Participated in the Conclave of 1878. Active in social reforms and the temperance movement.

Charles Milles Maddox Manson

(November 12, 1934, Cincinnati, Ohio-Alive). Cult Leader. Born "No Name" Maddox. Took name of Manson after one of his mother's numerous lovers. Spent much of his life in reformatories and prisons. Leader of "The Family" communal cult, c. 1968-Current. Taught racist and esoteric doctrines based on hatred and satanism. Responsible for inspiring Family members to ritualistically kill Sharon Tate, the actress wife of Roman Polanski, and her five friends, as well as three others, 1969. Convicted and sentenced to death, 1971. Sentence commuted to life in prison when California abolished the death penalty. Remains in prison at current time. Subject of Vincent Bugliosi's book, Helter Skelter (1974).
