(August 13, 1913, Pano Panayia, Cyprus-August 3, 1977, Nicosia, Cyprus). Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Cyprus, 1950-1977, and President of the Republic of Cyprus, 1960-1977. Born Mikhail Khristodolou Mouskos. Ordained Priest, Greek Orthodox Church, 1946. Bishop of Kition, 1948. Archbishop of Cyprus, 1950. Leader of the movement among Greek Cypriots for enosis (union with Greece). Exiled by British, 1956-1958. Sought independence for Cyprus, 1958. First President of independent Cyprus, August 16, 1960. Pursued neutralist policy. Pressured by Greek government to increase Greek influence in Cypriot affairs, while the Cypriot Orthodox Church pressured him to resign the Presidency. A terrorist campaign by General George Grivas led to his overthrow in a coup, July 15, 1974. After a brief exile, he returned to Cyprus and resumed his Presidency, July 23, 1974, remaining in office until his death.

Moved to Harlem, New York, where he became a leader in local narcotics, prostitution and gambling rings. Convicted of burglary in Boston, Massachusetts, 1946, and served 7 years in prison. Converted to the Nation of Islam while in prison. Changed his surname to "X" to replace his "slave name." Minister and National Spokesman for the Nation of Islam, a Black separatist organization. His eloquence, vivid personality, and suspicions about Elijah Muhammad's lifestyle caused conflicts within the Muslim community. Malcolm broke with the Nation of Islam in March, 1964. Founder, Muslim Mosque, Incorporated. After a trip to Mecca, he supported integration as a goal for America. His home was firebombed, February 14, 1965. One week later, he was assassinated at a speaking engagement by three assailants who were members of the Nation of Islam. |
