(March 22, 1907, Aljustrel, Portugal-February 13, 2005, Coimbra, Portugal). Roman Catholic Nun and Mystic. Born Lucia dos Santos. As a child, she was tending sheep with her two cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, when she had a mystical experience at Fatima, Portugal, where there was reputedly a miraculous appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, May 13, 1917. For the next five months, Mary appeared to the children and confided three "secrets" with them. Lucia, the last living Seer of Fatima, wrote the secrets down in 1944. On October 13, 1917, the "Miracle of the Sun" reportedly occurred at Fatima, with nearly 70,000 faithful witnessing the sun spinning out of control and back. She joined the Barefoot Carmelite convent in Coimbra, Portugal, 1921. Authored her "Memoirs" in 1941. Under a vow of silence, she remained in the Coimbra convent until her death. |
