Anton Szandor La Vey

(April 11, 1930, Chicago, Illinois-October 29, 1997, San Francisco, California). Founder, Church of Satan. A one-time lion tamer and hypnotist, Anton LaVey reflected California's penchant for the weird. In 1966, he formed the first Church of Satan and widely publicized his erotic rituals and rejection of traditional morals. He appeared in Rosemary's Baby and wrote The Satanic Bible (1969). Jane Mansfield was a devotee, along with Susan Atkins, later convicted in the LaBianca-Tate murders by the Manson Family.
