Noted for her unconventional and controversial "muscle re-education" treatment of polio with hot compresses and exercises. She rejected the use of the "iron lung" except in the most severe cases. Inventor of the "Sylvia stretcher" for the transport of victims of shock. Co-Author, The Kenny Concept of Infantile Paralysis and Its Treatment (1942) and And They Shall Walk (1943). Her title of "Sister" is an honorific reserved for nurses, rather than a designation for a nun. Subject of a Hollywood movie, "Sister Kenny," starring Rosalind Russell, 1943. Sister Kenny enjoyed a large following of believers in her methods, despite opposition from the medical establishment.
