St. Joan of Arc

(January 6, 1412, Greus-Domremy, Lorraine, France-May 30, 1431, Rouen, France). Roman Catholic Saint. Heard voices commanding her, as a young girl, to rescue France. Convinced the French Dauphin, Charles, of her mission and allowed to lead an army against the English. Defeated the English at the siege of Orleans and cleared the route to Rheims. Captured by the Gurgundians, who sold her to the English, 1430. Convicted of witchcraft and burned at the stake. A retrial was held and she was found innocent in 1456. Canonized Saint of the Roman Catholic Church, May 16, 1920.
