Married Lucy Harris, March 27, 1808. Farmer. Elected Road Overseer, Palmyra, New York. A Jeffersonian-Jacksonian Democrat. Considered himself an "unchurched restorationist," seeking return to Biblical Christianity. Met Joseph Smith, Jr. about 1816 and helped him protect the golden plates from thieves. Scribe to Joseph Smith, Jr., April 12-June 14, 1828, producing 116 manuscript pages, all of which were subsequently lost. Briefly imprisoned as a result of his missionary work, 1833. Member, First High Council of the Church. When his first wife died in 1836, married niece of Brigham Young. Lost struggle with Sidney Rigdon over paper money issue; excommunicated, December, 1837. Re-admitted and baptized, November 7, 1842. Remained in Kirtland after his family went to Utah, 1856. Moved to Salt Lake City, August 30, 1870.
