Reverend Dr. William Franklin "Billy" Graham
(1918, Charlotte, North Carolina-Alive). Evangelist. Ordained Minister, Southern Baptist Church. After a brief stint as a Pastor of a local church, he became an evangelist. In 1944, he became the first evangelist for Youth for Christ, and spoke at rallies throughout the U.S. and Britain. President, Northwestern Schools, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1947. Gradually, he religious revival crusades drew media attention and a 16-week crusade in England brough him international acclaim in 1954. One of the first televangelists, he preached to over 110 million people by the mid-1980s. A dynamic and powerful speaker who managed to avoid scandals (although he was accused of anti-Semitism in 2002, as a result of some taped conversations with President Nixon). As Graham aged, his message became more temperate and ecumenical. He became a confidant and counselor to several U.S. Presidents, authored numerous inspirational books, and assumed a commanding presence as the Dean of U.S. evangelists. Father of Franklin Graham.
