Rabbi Alexander David Goode

(May 10, 1911, Brooklyn, New York-February 4, 1943, on board SS Dorchester). Jewish Rabbi and Hero of WWII. Ordained Rabbi, Temple Beth Israel, York, Pennsylvania, 1937-1941. Enlisted as Chaplain, U.S. Army, 1941. Commissioned Second Lieutenant, 1942. On board the SS Dorchester, a freighter-turned troop transport, in the north Atlantic, when the ship was struck by a German torpedo, February 4, 1943. Along with 3 Christian Chaplains on the sinking vessel, he gave away his life jacket, parka, and gloves to help others survive. All four religious leaders died when the ship went down, standing on the deck with arms interlocked. Posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Cross. The Four Chaplains are commemorated on stamps, art works, memorials and a foundation giving an annual award for selfless sacrifice on behalf of others.

John Bartholomew Gough

(August 22, 1817, Sandgate, Kent, England-February 18, 1886, Frankford, Pennsylvania). Christian Temperance Lecturer. A recovering alcoholic. Attended a temperance meeting in Worcester, Massachusetts, 1842, and took a pledge to totally abstain from liquor. Began to lecture on the evils of alcohol and became, in time, the most popular public speaker in the United States and Great Britain. A personal friend of Charles Spurgeon.
