Reverend Robert Frederick Drinan, S.J.
(November 15, 1920-Alive). Roman Catholic Priest and Member of Congress, 1971-1981. Ordained Jesuit Priest, 1953. U.S. Representative (D-Massachusetts), 1971-1981. In Congress, he became a respected leader of the liberal members of the House, but his political activities raised concerns within the Vatican. By 1980, Rome had declared that elective office was incompatible with the priesthood, compelling Father Drinan to choose between his vocation and his avocation. A loyal Jesuit, he decided to withdraw from politics. Became a law professor at Georgetown University. One of only a few Catholic priests to serve in Congress and probably the last, as long as the Vatican ban remains in effect.
