Father Major Jealous Divine

(1877, Savannah, Georgia?-September 10, 1965, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). Founder/Prophet, International Peace Mission Movement, 1930-1965. Possibly born George Baker or Frederick Edwards. Birthplace either Savannah, Georgia, Providence, Rhode Island, or Monkey Run, Maryland. Preached as "The Messenger" in Baltimore, Maryland, c. 1900. Married Penninah, June 6, 1882 (sic!). Minister, Brooklyn, New York, 1919. Claimed to be the Second Coming of Christ. Took name "Father Divine," 1930, and founded the Peace Mission Movement. Provided jobs, meals, and free lodging for the needy. Preached integration and heaven on earth. Lived a lavish lifestyle. Arrested, November, 1931, as a "public nuisance" for attractng busloads of followers to his church. Three days after finding Divine guilty, the judge died of a heart attack. Divine's comment, "I hated to do it," reinforced the belief of his devotees that he was God. Married Edna Rose Ritching, April 29, 1946. She succeeded him as "Mother Divine."

(1925, Canada-Alive). Leader of the Peace Mission Movement. Born Edna Rose Ritching. Lived in Vancouver, British Columbia. Second wife of Major Jealous "Father" Divine, married April 29, 1946. Designated as Father Divine's successor and "Spotless Virgin Bride." Father Divine asserted that she embodied the person, spirit and nature of his first wife. Assumed leadership of the Peace Mission Movement, September 10, 1965. Originally known as "Sweet Angel," then as "Mother Divine." Founder, The Circle Mission Church, Home and Training School.

(July 24, 1937, Winona, Mississippi-Alive). Episcopal Bishop Pro Tempore of Washington, D.C., 2001-2002. Ordained Priest, 1982. Suffragan Bishop of Washington, D.C., May 30, 1992-2001. Bishop of Washington Pro Tempore, 2001-2002. A noted liberal. Second woman to be elevated to the office of Bishop in the Episcopal Church and the third in the worldwide Anglican Communion. Twice named as one of the 100 most influential women in the Washington metropolitan area by The Washingtonian. Once embroiled in a controversy with a dissident conservative congregation, which tried to barr her from their church and threatened to arrest the Bishop for trespass.
