Most Reverend Metropolitan Orestes P. Chornock

(1882, Russia-February 17, 1977, Stratford, Connecticut). Founder and 1st Bishop of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, 1937-1977. Married. Ordained Priest, Carpatho-Russian Catholic Church, August 26, 1906. Pastor, St. John the Baptist Carpatho-Russian Catholic Church (later the Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church), Bridgeport, Connecticut, 1911-March, 1947. The Carpatho-Russian community split over demands by Roman Catholics for a celebate clergy. Chornock was suspended as a priest and excommunicated for siding with the defenders of the married clergy. His wife died in 1936. On November 23, 1937, a Congress of Churches formally split from Rome and sought recognition by the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople. Chornock was chosen as 1st Bishop and consecrated September 18, 1938. Named Metropolitan, January 1, 1966.

(January 13, 1906, Fultali, East Bengal, India-June 7, 1992, India). Indian Spiritual Teacher. Film maker. Bank Manager. Owner, Toy Shop, Calcutta, India. Householder. As a spiritual teacher, he lacked an ashram, western followers, flowing robes, and other outer signs of his station. He simply called himself "Babaji" ("an elder brother"), after 1967. Noted for challenging religious conventions, customs, and paths. Jailed in 1931 for alleged participation in the freedom movement. Reputedly possessed the ability to bi-locate and perform other miracles.
