The Carpatho-Russian community split over demands by Roman Catholics for a celebate clergy. Chornock was suspended as a priest and excommunicated for siding with the defenders of the married clergy. His wife died in 1936. On November 23, 1937, a Congress of Churches formally split from Rome and sought recognition by the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople. Chornock was chosen as 1st Bishop and consecrated September 18, 1938. Named Metropolitan, January 1, 1966.
