Charles Bradlaugh

(September 26, 1833, Hoxton, London, England-January 30, 1891, London, England). Atheist and Free Thinker. Soldier, Seventh Dragoon Guards, 1850-1853. Publisher, The National Reformer, 1860. Co-Founder, National Secular Society, 1866. With Annie Besant, he published Charles Knowlton's book The Fruits of Philosophy, which advocated birth control, 1877. Convicted of "obscene libel." Elected to the House of Commons, 1880, but not seated because he asked to affirm rather than swear his oath of office. When he tried to take his seat anyway, he was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London. After repeated failures to again be seated after his release, he gained Gladstone's support for an Affirmation Bill. The bill was defeated in Commons, 1883. Re-elected in 1884, he voted 3 times before he was excluded. He was finally seated in 1886 and served until his death.
