Member of the prominent Beecher family and brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Ordained Minister, New School Presbytery of Cincinnati, Ohio, 1837. Pastor, Plymouth Congregational Church, Brooklyn, New York, 1847-1887. Noted for his florid, unorthodox, and emotional sermons. Opposed slavery and supported women's rights. Accused by a congregant, Theodore Tilton, of adultery with Tilton's wife, 1874. Although cleared in a sensational trial, his reputation was seriously damaged and his influence diminished thereafter.

Author of De Philosophia Cartesiana. Attacked the belief in sorcery and demonic possesion in his book Die Betooverde Wereld (1691). Deposed from the ministry for his liberal views, 1691. Tried for blasphemy, maligning the public Church, and spreading atheistic thought. While his books were banned in various places, he remained in his position in Amsterdam until his death.
