(August 27, 1698, Okup, Podolia, Ukraine-May 23, 1760, Medzibusch, Ukraine). Jewish Founder of Hasidism. Born Israel ben Eliezer. Orphaned at an early age. Worked as a heder, a synagogue watchman, quarry worker, and an inn-keeper. Gained a reputation as a miracle healer and mystic. Reveled himself as the Ba'al Shem Tov (Master of the Good Name) or Besht, May 22, 1734. Experienced enlightenment from heavenly teachers. Taught that God must be worshipped with joy and emphasized prayer as a way to reach the divine world. Opposed by traditional Jewish religious leaders. |
