World Pastor, Holy Alamo Christian Church . Born Bernie Lazar Hoffman, a Jew. Adopted the stage name "Tony Alamo" to further his singing career. Married Susan Alamo, allegedly supernaturally healed her of tuberculosis and told by God she would preach the Gospel in the last days. Became a charismatic evangelist. Founder, Alamo Christian Foundation, 1969, and Alamo Christian Ministries. Ministry grew quickly, attracting young people through its outreach. Used "volunteers" from his drug rehab program to manufacture clothing for sale. Charged with violation of the Fair Labor Practices Act, 1976. His wife died in 1982 and he was later accused of taking two 15-year old wives. Subject of IRS suit which challenged church's tax exempt status, 1985. Accused of beating an 11 year old child by ordering his parents over the phone to administer punishment, 1988. Convicted of Income Tax evasion, 1994. Released from prison, 1998, and resumed ministry. Accused of operating a cult. An outspoken anti-Catholic. |
