Barely survived a plane crash during the 1987 election campaign. Admitted smear campaign against his political rival in 1987, causing his party to lose its majority in the Schleswig-Holstein Parliament. On October 2, 1987, he withdrew as Minister President. On October 11, 1987, he was found dead in a hotel in Geneva, victim of either murder or suicide.
