Forged the Indian National Congress into a mass independence movement using boycotts, fasts, marches, and non-violent opposition to British rule. Urged reform of Hinduism to eliminate castes and arranged marriages. Spent 12 years in British jails but emerged as a national hero. Opposed the partition of India when independence was achieved on August 15, 1947 and urged the unity of Muslims and Hindus in a single nation. On January 30, 1948, he was assassinated in New Delhi by Nathu Ram Vinayak Godse. Noted as one of the greatest spiritual leaders of the modern world.
