One of the first Jesuits. Ordained Priest, Society of Jesus, June 24, 1537. Missionary to India, arriving in Goa in May, 1542. Set out for Japan, 1549, but died off the coast of China, seeking to obtain entrance to that Empire. Miracles have been attributed to him by his followers. Canonized Saint of the Roman Catholic Church, March 12, 1622.
